HELPFUL TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

After researching several accounts of information on the topic of mental healthcare, I decided to interview a licensed therapist. After asking a few questions concerning how she handles different mental illness situations, I chose to quote her feedback (with consent) and add it into my website. I also wanted to add a number of helpful tips and suggestions that I have researched and may be useful for aiding stressful or difficult situations.

Feedback from a licensed therapist (Advanced Psychological Services)

1. What advice would you give to students who are experiencing social anxiety throughout high school?

"Remember that you notice your insecurities more than other people"

2. How can mental health issues interfere with a teens' schoolwork?

"A student who is depressed may not have the capacity to complete homework assignments. A student with anxiety may not perform well with public speaking or participating in classroom discussions. These are just two examples of how mental health issues can interfere with a teen's school work. There are so many ways school can be affected, which is why speaking with a teacher or school psychologist or social worker is so important!"

3. Do you have any advice you could give to high school students who are struggling to control their mental health?

"Reach out to someone and talk through any issues you are having. Help is available, but you have to let someone know. Also, talk to your family and friends. Having a good support system is crucial!"

4. Why did you decide to enter a career in which mental health is a priority?

"I decided to enter a career because of my own mental health struggles. I wanted to be someone who helped other people just like the way someone was there to help me."

5. What would you recommend to a student who is struggling with their mental health but is afraid to seek help?

"It can be hard admitting to struggling with mental health issues, but there are so many people that are more than willing to help you! Helping students in need is what some people do for a living, so use them! There are confidentiality laws in place so that what you say cannot be repeated, with a few exceptions that your provider will explain to you. Taking care of yourself and getting the help you need is extremely important and will definitely help you in the long run."

Where to start?

If you find yourself wanting some help or needing to talk with someone, reach out to your WHS guidance counselor. (Mrs. Roy, Mr Fiore, and Mrs. Koss). These people are here to help and are the first step towards improving your health :)
